Chelsea Handler shed tears during a heartfelt video advocating for rescue animals

She told the story of how much improvement she saw in one of her rescue dogs.

COMEDIAN CHELSEA HANDLER was a little more vulnerable than we’re used to seeing when she took to Twitter and Instagram to share her dog adoption story.

Yesterday was Clear The Shelters Day, a day when people are encouraged to re-home an abandoned animal. Almost 15,000 dogs pass through Irish shelters a year and nearly one in five are put to sleep.

Chelsea got both of her dogs from shelters in America, her dog Chunk came from a pound in Los Angeles and Tammy came from the Long Beach pound.

She shared her story about adopting Tammy:

I went into this pound and I found the ugliest looking dog I could find and that was Tammy. And I had her for two weeks and she blossomed and she bloomed and she was beautiful and I took her home and she had nutrition and she was a different dog.

She broke down a little bit as she moved on:

Unfortunately, today, she is no longer with us because I did have to put her down. She was having respiratory failure and kidney failure and all this other ugly stuff.

It’s so sad, but I’m just so happy that she had somebody to love her for two years and she added to my life more than I probably added to hers. But she was the cutest dog and she was a bitch with an attitude and she lived in lower Bel Air in the last two years of her life. Talk about going out in the sunset of your life.

She ended the video on this nice note:

So, I love my dog and I will never be able to say how much value dogs bring to your life. So please go rescue a dog.
